Dentistry is one such pathway through which the treatment of diseases and other conditions which would affect one’s teeth and gums. It especially repairs and helps in the extraction of teeth along with the insertion of artificial ones.
Sedation dentistry which is also known as sleep dentistry is a treatment which is used by many dentists where they help at easing stress and relax one’s mind and body. It mostly suits people who have dental anxiety or who cannot wait during longer appointment periods. In actuality, there are three types of dentistry from which the patients can choose from.
Intravenous Sedation
Commonly known as IV sedation, is considered to be the deepest level of sedation. During this type of treatment, the medication to be taken in by the patient is given through a needle which would be inserted in their veins. Since this medicine is injected directly to the main bloodstream, it takes effect pretty soon and is much stronger to last till the end of the appointment.
Oral Sedation
Sometimes, many patients would not like or would not be able to withstand IV sedation. For those people, there is an option to choose oral sedation instead of it and it is also an affordable sedation dentistry option. It basically involves the patient in taking a small amount of prescribed pill before the given time of the appointment.
It mostly does not have any lingering side effects unlike the previously discussed one. The patients who intake this one would have a relaxing and calming effect throughout the appointment. Thought the effects are not as strong as IV sedation, the effects still would take time to wear off after the appointment and hence the patients must be assisted by someone.
Nitrous Oxide
Popularly known as laughing gas, is also one among the three techniques. It is considered to be one among the lightest form of sedation technique where the patients would be asked to breathe in this concentrated mixture which in turn would ease their nerves and would give them ultimate relaxation. This method rarely has any side effects and the effects of it vanish as soon as the nitrous oxide is removed.
